Reclaiming Conservation Workshop

Post by IMPACT Kenya

IMPACT together with PARAN Alliance and it's other member organizations thought it is an apt moment to organize an open dialogue forum geared towards conservation models and how it interacts with the dominant livelihood systems. The converstaion dialogue aimed at taking stock of the ongoing conservation models and initiatives that are being promoted and rapidly expanding in the pastoralists counties of Laikipia, Isiolo, Samburu, Marsabit, Narok, Kajiado, Baringo, West Pokot and Garissa.Panelists and participants drawn mainly from Pastoralist Communities, Pastoralists' CSOs, Conservation NGOs, National & County Government Agencies, Researchers and Academia engaged in a conservation dialogue aimed at securing indigenous people’s rights to natural resources and ensure sustainable development.

The dialogue offered an opportunity for participants to assess the power relations, governance and decision making during the process of creating and running community-based conservancies.Participants solemnly agreed to initiate a public debate that will define a community-led conservation to sustain biodiversity and strengthen traditional livelihood systems that are mutually supportive and respect communal land.
